Tap Into Growth

In its January issue, this magazine cited a study by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Center for Marketing Research showing corporate use of social media nearly doubled from 2007 to 2008 in companies on Inc. Magazine’s list of the 500 fastest-growing private companies. Most of this was probably for outward-facing sales and marketing networking. The potential benefits from using this technology to boost internal communication and knowledge sharing are still mostly untapped. While you probably don’t want to actually use Facebook, LinkedIn or other popular consumer-oriented social-networking applications inside your firewall due to a lack of control and security, numerous low-cost and even free open-source applications can either provide similar function or wrap around these popular applications to make them fit securely into the enterprise environment.
