Businesses of all sizes are amassing data faster than ever before. They’re collecting and digitizing it to implement customer relationship management (CRM) and ERP solutions, and they’re increasingly relying on data for business intelligence and analytics. Various legislative organizations add to the flood by requiring more collection and longer retention times. Data is running rampant.

“Clients are finding their data often doubles or more every year,” says Victor Nemechek, ProtecTIER* deduplication offering manager at IBM. “And their current backup systems make it difficult to capture that data, protect it and restore it when they need to.”

To address these issues, IBM rolled out data deduplication technology in the form of IBM System Storage* TS7680 ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z* environments. The TS7680 combines a virtual tape library solution, with IBM’s unique and patented HyperFactor* deduplication technology and integrated native replication technology to provide users an optimal disk-based target for System z applications that traditionally use tape.

No Longer a Novelty

This is the first mainframe deduplication solution from IBM. Already proven in the Power Systems* arena, the ProtecTIER technology released last year is quickly becoming popular for System z clients. “When we first starting talking to clients about deduplication technology—about three years ago—we’d have to explain what it is,” Nemechek says. “Now we don’t. It’s gone beyond a novelty or a hyped-up trend. It’s now an established technology that pretty much everyone in the open systems market is using because they understand the power of deduplication and they see how it can really help them in their backup and recovery operations.”

Introducing deduplication to mainframe clients was an obvious choice for IBM and the timing is right, Nemechek says. “Traditionally, mainframe clients are generally more cautious of adopting new technology, but they are seeing that the benefits of deduplication and the replication that goes along with it are established, powerful tools.”
