Should You Rent or Own Your Employees?

Consultants can increase employee effectiveness

Consultants can increase employee effectiveness

What’s the Best Fit for You?

Either a consultant or an employee will perform tasks. Either one will get the job done. You need to weigh the pros and cons of a consultant or an employee.

A consultant may:

  • Have certain expertise not available in the organization
  • Be able to ramp up quickly on a new project due to experience
  • May be more costly than an employee
  • Is more easily terminated when a project is completed

An employee may:

  • Be more dedicated and loyal to an organization
  • Have business knowledge that can be very valuable
  • May be more cost-effective than a consultant
  • Enable greater control over their work output

I’ve found that a combination of a consultant working closely with employees can be very productive. Bringing in consultants for their expertise and involving the employees for their business knowledge can be beneficial. Learn from the consultant, perform knowledge transfer both ways and let the employees be the owners of the process.

It’s Your Turn. What do you think? Have you decided what’s best for you? Join the conversation in a specially created blog where you can comment.
