    Getting Started With IFS Containers

The term “container” has become commonplace in the IT industry. It’s sometimes beneficial to work in, or deploy applications in, an isolated environment. IBM i has long had capabilities to separate and manage workloads independently, by way of subsystems, memory pools, workload capping groups, and so on. IBM i also has the capability for chroot-based containers in the QOpenSys filesystem. Today, I’ll get you started with this useful technology.

10 Amazing Things that Happened in 2018

At the beginning of 2018, I stood in front of the IBM i Large User Group and made a not-so-bold promise: it’s going to be a breakthrough year for open source on this platform! Not surprisingly, my prediction held true. For today’s brief blog post, I wanted to list (in no particular order) 10 of the many amazing things that happened in 2018.

A Game-Changer for Open Source Support!

Without a doubt, open source has brought a wealth of new capabilities to IBM i. Indeed, it’s a very exciting time to be running your business and driving innovation with the platform! However, real business value often requires more than just technology: it requires dependability, sustainability, performance, and peace of mind.

    All Hail the Midnight Commander!

Quite often, I’m asked how open source deliveries are prioritized at IBM. The answer isn’t simple. Even after we estimate the cost of a project, there are many factors to consider. For instance, does it enable a specific solution to run? Does it expand a programming language’s abilities? Is it highly-requested by the community or vendors?

Three Ways Open Source Brings Business Value

The IBM i development teams have been delivering new open source software at a mind-numbing rate. In fact, it’s hard to keep up! Since our move to RPMs in May, hundreds of new packages have been delivered that help with application development, system administration and many things in between. In fact, I was in the middle of writing a short blog post about a tool called “Midnight Commander” when Steve Will published a discussion about some of our business results.

A Marketing Guy’s Perspective on Open Source

For a change of pace, I thought it would be interesting to explore some observations from someone who works in the marketing side of IBM i. For this, I reached out to Brandon Pederson, today’s guest author. Brandon works hard to promote IBM i on a daily basis, and he’s a great guy to work with. I thank him for sharing his point of view!

Open Source Has Never Tasted So Good!

Yes, my blog has been a bit “dry” lately, but the open-source world certainly hasn’t been! In fact, we recently released one of the most significant enhancements to date. While I’ve spent the last few months speaking at conferences, user groups and briefings, my favorite topic of discussion has been this momentous delivery. And, at the POWERUp18 conference (formerly known as the COMMON Annual Meeting), I had the privilege of announcing it as generally available.

The Top 3 Reasons System Admins Should Care about Open Source on IBM i

For today’s blog, I am very happy to partner with guest writer Valerie Smith. Valerie is one of the published “Fresh Faces of IBM i,”  and you can check out her bio in the May 2017 issue. I’ve often mentioned that open source is “not just for the programmer.” In today’s post, Valerie shares three great reasons system administrators should be watching the open source space!
