  • Does This Code Make Me Look Old?

Can our code make us, as developers, look old? What if we're still writing code pretty much the same way we did 10 or 20 years ago? If modernizing the code makes it easier to maintain and enhance, there will indeed be a return on the investment.

    The Apple of Our Eye

As most of regular readers know, we switched to using Macs some years ago. Jon was the first to take the leap, thereby fulfilling his role as techno-guinea-pig. Realizing how much simpler his life had become without the daily frustrations of Windows, Susan subsequently made the switch when she was due for a hardware upgrade. It was probably the best technical decision we have ever made--with of course the exception of having chosen the IBM i as our server platform of choice!

    Having Problems With Free-Format RPG?

There we were in our usual "What on earth can we write about this week" state when an email arrived from a conference attendee asking why, even though they were running on a V7 release, they "cannot compile the new free form RPG?" Inspiration! We've been asked this question so many times that perhaps it is time to put the answer it in our blog, where the gods of Google can find it!

How Did We Miss RPG IV's Coming of Age?

We had been debating how "old" RPG IV was, so we decided to check the dates for V3R1, because that coincided with the initial release of RPG IV (aka ILE RPG). We were astounded to find that the GA date for that release was Nov. 25, 1994! Our baby is already 20 years old and we didn't even have a party!

    Newish RPG Features

Yesterday’s mail included an update from the RPG Cafe that appeared to be announcing two new features for V7.1 and 7.2 RPG. We attempted to download the PTF only to be told that it was already installed. Strange ... wonder who did that? A DSPPTF revealed the answer. This was not actually a new announcement; rather it was an update to the wiki page.  These updates became available back in October 2014!

    Spring Into Conference Season

Spring is here and with it comes conference season. So far we've spoken at three events: the WMCPA event in Wisconsin, the NEUCG conference in Massachusetts, and of course our own RPG & DB2 Summit in Texas. We have one more spring conference yet to attend in Toronto. Exhausting as they are, we always enjoy these events and there's always some new "trends" that seem to emerge.

Hot Response to the Future of DDS

Wow! Who knew so many people cared about the future of DDS!
When we published our opinion piece “Life After DDS”  on earlier this month, we had no idea of the amount of reaction it would get. We had certainly hoped for some comments - and indeed a number of people did comment. But more surprising were the number of tweets and LinkedIn references it generated. Clearly, it is subject that interested people and so we decided to continue the conversation in this week's blog.

    iSphere Update

We've talked about iSphere before. It's a great set of plug-ins to RDi (or RDP or WDSC) that makes RSE even better. This is just a brief update on that subject.

There's a new way to install or update your iSphere plug-in. By the way, did your installation inform you that a new version was available? Ours did! When we started RDi recently it started informing us that iSphere 2.5.2 was available to install!

Who Knew RPGers Were So Important?

Now we all like to think we are vital to the well-being of our companies, but according to CSC a shortage of RPG coders was partially responsible for a revenue shortfall of $230 million last year. Yes that’s “million.” While "only" $25 million to $40 million was specifically associated with the company's RPG skills shortage, that still strikes us as a huge number. Hopefully upon reading that, all of CSC’s current RPG staff immediately demanded a pay raise. Clearly they are much more valuable than they had previously imagined!

    Is the Desktop PC Dead?

We can’t recall the last time that we thought of buying a desktop PC. With the exception of perhaps the iMac, they are just so passé. Every time we visit Best Buy or similar stores it is nothing but wall-to-wall laptops and tablets--not to mention giant cell phones. And while we are sometimes tempted by iMacs, that purchase will wait until we’re on the road a lot less than we are now and no longer depend on MacBooks as our day-to-day machines.
