COMMON Europe Conference 2012

June 12, 2012

I had the great opportunity to attend COMMON Europe this week. This trip consists of two parts – the first is the COMMON Europe Congress (CEC) that is made up of 5 tracks of sessions. I had sessions on the performance management topics I typically speak about. I also covered IBM Systems Director and how you can manage your IBM i and Power Systems with Director.

Following the CEC, the COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC) met. This is a similar organization to the COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) where IBM meets with clients to discuss future plans (all members of CEAC and CAAC are under non-disclosure agreements and cannot share any of the details discussed) and the advisory councils have a process for submitting requirements to IBM.

Trips such as this are always rewarding. It's great to be able to meet and talk with colleagues throughout the world who are also passionate about IBM i. It's really rewarding when these colleagues mention this blog and the things they have learned about from it. The “icing on the cake” is when a conference attendee thanks you for your presentation and how the information will help them with their job.

COMMON Europe was held in Vienna, Austria, which is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Part of the CEC is the “gala dinner,” which is a dinner for everyone attending the conference. This dinner was held at the Austrian National Library. When we arrived at the library, there was a large, plain room set up for the event. However, prior to dinner being served, we had the opportunity to go upstairs into the library itself. It is magnificent! The treasures held in that library are unimaginable. I would have loved to been able to peruse one of two of those old books....
