Ease of use was a primary focus of IBM in its development of DB2 11. Another example of this comes with the new capability added to the DROP PENDING CHANGES clause.

    DB2 11 Enables Auto-Recovery of Indexes from GRECP/LPL Status

During a recent reading of the DB2 11 Administration guide, I learned that another autonomic feature has been added to improve availability. Now indexes that are in a group buffer pool recovery pending (GRECP) or logical page list (LPL) status can be recovered automatically.

Data Server Manager Now Supports DB2 for z/OS

In October I covered the announcement of IBM Data Server Manager. In a sense, I jumped the gun, because the initial release supported only DB2 for LUW. But given the significance of this product, I was excited to write about it -- plus I knew that the DB2 for z/OS version would be out soon. Indeed, Data Server Manager 1.1.2 was released on Dec. 12 with DB2 for z/OS support.

Temporal Special Registers Simplify 'Time Travel'

DB2 10 introduced the concept of "time travel" queries. When DB2 11 came out, I wrote a post titled, "Time Travel Views Not Supported in DB2 11." I should clarify that DB2 11 does support time travel views through the use of new temporal special registers.

    BIND/DDL Thread Break-In

DB2 10 for z/OS introduced high-performance database access threads (DBATs). Also known as DDF threads, DBATs are used to execute packages bound with option RELEASE(DEALLOCATE). For an excellent in-depth look at this topic, IBMer Robert Catterall examines some of the system parameters you should be aware of before implementing DBATs.

Identifying Excessive DSNDB07 Sort Work Usage

During a recent DB2 user group meeting, a question came up about identifying applications that consume excessive amounts of DB2 DSNDB07 sort work. As the presenter, IBM's Robert Catterall, noted, this capability is available in DB2 11 through some new system parameters.

    The Client Application Correlation Token

The client application correlation token is another helpful tool delivered with DB2 11. But before getting into the details, let's briefly recount at the history of the correlation-id, or CORR-ID.

The Dangers of Moving DB2 Data Off of z Systems

In last week's post about the DB2 12 for z/OS ESP, I explained how customers can benefit by keeping data in DB2 for z/OS while the IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator provides ETL support and analytic processing. David Beulke and Brian Smith and Bob Potter expound on this topic in two interesting posts.

    IBM Launching DB2 12 for z/OS ESP

It was exciting to attend the recent IBM Insight 2015 conference -- especially now that I'm an IBM employee. Last month I was hired as a DB2 advisor for z/OS, and in that role, I'll help DB2 for z/OS customers plan their migrations and educate them on new DB2 features and other technical aspects of the IBM database.

    DB2 11 Enhanced DB2 Restart

Last week I wrote about the new group buffer pool CASTOUT processing DB2 11 performs to improve overall memory constraints. Now I'll explain how castout processing relates to restarting DB2 and tell you about the new castout parameter used in the –START DB2 LIGHT() command.
