Biography

Jim Utsler

Jim Utsler

Jim Utsler, IBM Systems Magazine senior writer, has been writing for IBM since the mid-1990s. Over that time, he has covered myriad technological advances—and seen numerous IBM platform and magazine name changes. Although he currently focuses on customer success stories, he also writes articles of general computing interests and about new and emerging technologies.

He has also written stories for magazines as diverse as Automotive News, Electronic Commerce World and PGA Magazine. (A Google search for “Jim Utsler” will result in hundreds of samples of his published work.) Jim is also a freelance illustrator and the author of two currently unpublished novels (one a thriller about the early days of PC development).

Jim—a rabid Mac fan since he first purchased an Apple LC III in the early 1990s—has a degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, near where he currently lives. Although he doesn’t fly a maize-and-blue flag in front of his house, he can be heard shouting “Go Blue!” with Tourette’s-like enthusiasm even during the Wolverines’ off-season. While in school, he was a copy editor for Mathematical Reviews, an experience that taught him that math actually does make sense. His now, oft-repeated rebuke of himself is, “If I had been born smart enough, I would have been a physicist.”

When not putting fingers to keyboard, rooting for his alma mater, listening to NPR or grinding the gears on his old 1980’s convertible, he spends time with his wife, Deanna, and two children, Andrew and David, as well as other family members and friends. Now, if only he could find a publisher for his two novels…
